Sound of Sunday 9 October – Guest Mike Read

mikeread

Never say never!  The intention with the series of shows about Saturday morning Tv that is on air all this week on HRB was always that they would bring the sequence of guests to do with Saturday morning Tv to an end.  We've being doing it for 10 years so it seemed the logical time to move on – maybe until the 50th aniversary!

There was still one thing to clear uyp though – the winners of the Saturday Morning TV SuperQuiz which has been running with all our guests for the last 10 years. We played out all those who took part in one of our specials last Saturday morning including Trev Neal getting his prize at the Leicester Square Theatre earlier int he year.  Andi Peters has been sent his mug and certificate, which leaves Mike Read to get his – which will be this Sunday, sort of.

Mike will join us on the phone to talk about his new TV show Tin Pan Alley.  We'll also officially declare him one of the 3 winners of the quiz and he will be choosing this weekend's Sainsbury's winner.

The Sound of Sunday live from 1.30 this Sunday on HRB.

It Started with Swap Shop…

sos-it-started-with-swap-shop

Exactly 40 years ago Saturday morning TV changed forever when Multi Coloured Swap Shop went on the air for the first time.  It, and the shows that followed it over the following 30+ years shaped many aspects of TV and influenced many who went on to work in TV and radio.

This Sunday, The Sound of Sunday will be marking the anniversary with a special programme featuring clips from the programmes and those who have taken part including Maggie Philbin, Keith Chegwin, Trev and Simon, Ortis Deley, Mitch Johnson, Basil Brish, Mark Rhodes and Andi Peters.

Join us for a trip down memory lane with plenty of nostalgia and memories in a Sound of Sunday special, Sunday at 3pm.

The programme will be part of a week of special editions of The Sound of Sunday starting on Friday 5.25 and continuing on Saturday morning as the stars of Saturday morning TV take part in the Sound of Sunday Saturday Morning TV SuperQuiz.

For the last 10 years, the stars of Saturday morning TV have been taking part on The Sound of Sunday Saturday Morning Tv SuperQuiz, with Live and Kicking's Andi Peters the final person to take part last weekend.

Those who have taken part include Maggie Philbin, Trev and Simon, Keith Chegwin, Mike Read, Noel Edmonds and Basil Brush.  3 people got every single question correct and were therefore presented with a certificate and HRB mug.

Presenter Neil Ogden caught up with Trev Neal at the Leicester Square Theatre in London to give him his certificate.

Show 1035 – Sunday 25 September 2016

sos 40 years Saturday Mornng TV

10 years ago, we started something that I never thought would continue this long.  In October 2006, Saturday morning TV was celebrating 30 years since the first show Swap Shop went on the air.  IN 1 October that year, we did a special 3 hour show telling the story of Swap Shop and all the shows since.  Saturday morning presenters Magie Philbin, Trev and Simon and Mitch Johnson joined me on the show and it was one of those shows which started as a small idea and grew to something much bigger.

Later that year, the BBC produced a show called It Started with Swap Shop, which was the most watched show on BBC2 that Christmas and in the last 10 years, I have had the pleasure to talk to many more presenters who were part of so many people's lives since 1976 on Saturday mornings.

The thing that I have found is that our listeners really are still interested in Saturday morning TV and remembering those shows, and those who were part of them LOVE talking about it!  Trev Neal and Simon Hickson produced the most enthusiastic reaction to any of the guests we've ever had on the show.

All those who have appeared on the show have taken part in the Saturday morning Tv SuperQuiz, testing their knowledge of their era of Saturday morning TV, and through all the special guests, we have a wealth of material that has now been put into one final Saturday morning Tv project.

First everyone taking part in the quiz makes up one show.  We've given prizes and certificates to the winner and it was great to finally get to meet Trev and Simon a few weeks ago in order to give Trev his certificate and HRB mug.

I've also compiled the interviews and clips from the shows into one special 90 minute show which will go out on 2 October – the anniversary itself.

Finally, some of the interviews will be repeated in full in 3 more Best of the Guests shows.  We've also put together two music based shows.

It's been a personal pleasure talking to so many of the people I grew up watching over the last few years and this seemed to be a great way to bring this particular theme to an end.  So it all starts this Sunday when Andi Peters will join me as my special guest and tries his hand at the quiz.

For everyone who remembers all of these shows, these are 8 shows you won't want to miss!

Special Guest Andi Peters This Weekend

andi-peters

TV presenter Andi Peters will be the special guest on The Sound of Sunday this weekend to continue the show's celebration of 40 years since the first Saturday morning Tv show Multi-Coloured Swap Shop started.

Andi presented in the CBBC Broom Cupboard alongside Ed The Duck from 1989 until 1993 before moving to present Saturday morning show Live and Kicking in 1993.  Since then his TV career has taken him infront of and behind the camera and he can currently be found on Good Morning Britain on ITV.

Andi ewill be remembering his time on at the BBC and he will be the last person to participate in the Sound of Sunday Saturday Morning Tv SuperQuiz to find out how much he knows about Saturday morning TV.  Find out how he does and if he can beat Trev Neal and Mike Read who currently share first place with 100% on Sunday afternoon.

Show 1029 – 14 August 2016

sos 25 years logo

Every year at the start of a new season, we make some minor, or sometimes major changes to the shww's running order.  Sometimes these changes end up being reversed, but this year, they all seemed to work as planned.  Sundays have got much busier in the last 12 months though, with generally more requests in particular.  In the whole of last Sunday, we played around 70 requests on HRB which is great, and when you add in the Sainsbury's draw which gets us back on the wards DURING the show, it shows that our listeners are still very much at the heart of what we do on the show and on HRB.

Rarely does a Sunday go by without having to drop something and last weekend it was the start of our Memory Makers series remembering Saturday nmorning TV.  It's 40 years since Swap Shop started and we will be marking that anniverary with a special show that will be heard on 2 October.  Do tell us your Saturday morning TV memories.

We'll also reflect on the sport this weekend with the return of the Premier League and of course the Rio Olympics.

Series 26 Starts here

sos 25 years logo

After just one week off (well actually we have never really been away if you count the two summer specials over the last fortnoght), series 26 of The Sound of Sunday starts this weekend.

Not a huge amount will change.  We have moved a couple of things around the running order, refreshed the Sainsbury's Draw theme and added a new competition, but other than that series 26 will sound much the same as series 25.

One thing that we will be doing over the next couple of months is cokmpleting something that we started 10 years ago.  In 2006 we celebrated 30 years of Saturday morning TV and since then we have had numerous people from Saturday morning TV on as spoecial guests.  They all took part io the Saturday Morning TV SuperQuiz and on the occasion of the 40th anniversary, we thought it was time to bring that particular feature to an end.  The winner has already received their prize.  Find out more in the coming weeks as Memory Makers marks 40 years since the start of Swap Shop and in October we bring you a very special show featuring all our guests from the last 10 years along with clips from the shows and plenty more.

The End of an Era

SDC19836

27 July 2012 was the night “The Isles of Wonder” opened London 2012.  27 July 2015, exactly 3 years on and the same track where Jessica Ennis, Mo Farrah and Usain Bolt did their stuff, came to the end of its life with the Diamond 5 x 5K Relay being the final event before the track is relaid for future events.

HRB’s Neil Ogden was there for the event as a volunteer and managed to grab a chat with Geoff Wightman, Head of Roadrunning at British Athletics about the event and the end of an era.

Hear what he had to say on The Sound of Sunday this Sunday afternoon (2nd August) from 1.30.
